Six Fasts of Shawwal: Virtues and Significance
After observing the mandatory fasts of Ramadan, keeping six additional fasts in the month of Shawwal is a profound Sunnah that carries immense spiritual rewards.
1. Reward of Fasting for an Entire Year
The most significant merit of these fasts is that they equate to fasting for a full year. As recorded in Sahih Muslim, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
"Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime (the whole year)." (Sahih Muslim, 1164)
Logical Calculation: According to the Holy Quran, "Whoever brings a good deed shall have ten times the like thereof" (Surah Al-An'am: 160). Thus, 30 days of Ramadan multiplied by 10 equals 300 days, and 6 days of Shawwal multiplied by 10 equals 60 days, totaling 360 days—a complete lunar year.
2. A Sign of Accepted Worship
Scholars believe that a sign of an accepted good deed is the divine inspiration to perform another good deed afterward. Continuing to fast in Shawwal signifies that the believer's devotion did not end with Ramadan but is a consistent part of their life.
3. Compelling Deficiencies in Obligatory Fasts
On the Day of Judgment, voluntary (Nafil) acts will compensate for any shortcomings in obligatory (Fard) acts. These six fasts serve as a "safety net" to mend any flaws or unintentional lapses occurred during the month of Ramadan.
Conclusion:
These fasts can be kept consecutively or separately throughout the month of Shawwal. It is a golden opportunity to strengthen our bond with Allah and maintain the spiritual momentum gained during Ramadan.
